Leo Giron was a Filipino martial artist and teacher who is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the development and spread of Filipino martial arts in the United States. He was born on August 18, 1911, in the Philippines, and grew up in a family that practiced traditional Filipino martial arts.
Giron began his martial arts training at a young age.
In 1936, Giron emigrated to the United States and settled in Stockton, California. There, he continued to practice and teach Filipino martial arts, eventually founding his own school, which he called Bahala Na. The name Bahala Na, which means "come what may" in Tagalog, reflected Giron's philosophy of martial arts, which emphasized adaptability and the ability to respond to changing circumstances.
Over the years, Giron became increasingly well-known in the martial arts community, both in the United States and internationally. He was highly respected for his skill as a practitioner and his innovative teaching methods, which emphasized practical applications of martial arts techniques in real-world situations.
Giron also played an important role in the spread of Filipino martial arts in the United States, both through his teaching and through his involvement in various martial arts organizations. He helped to establish the Filipino American National Historical Society and was instrumental in organizing the first Filipino martial arts tournament in the United States.
Throughout his life, Giron remained dedicated to the practice and teaching of Filipino martial arts. He continued to teach at his school in Stockton until his death in 2002, and his legacy continues to be felt in the martial arts community to this day. He is remembered as a true pioneer in the development and spread of Filipino martial arts in the United States, and as a skilled practitioner and teacher who was deeply committed to his craft.

Grand Master Tony Somera of the Bahala Na® Martial Arts, Giron® Arnis Escrima. As a direct result of superior skill and devotion to the principles, philosophy and purpose of Bahala Na Martial Arts combined with leadership and his master level Instructorship, Master Tony Somera was promoted to the rank and responsibility of Grand Master by the late Grand Master and founder of Bahala Na® Martial Arts Leo M. Giron. Grand Master Somera promoted the art of Giron® Arnis Escrima along with its rich Filipino History and culture by providing opportunities for students and community members to visit historic sites and learn Filipino American history through bi-annual “affiliate camps” held in Stockton. Tony Somera is the only person ever to be promoted to the rank of Master and then Grand Master by the late Grand Master Emeritus Leo M. Giron.
